New Years Resolution And The Power Of Habit
At five minutes past midnight on December 31st 2008, I begin writing my very first blog ever. All things considered, one topic seems appropriate. The yearly ritual of the new years resolution. In just less than 24 hours another new year will arrive. Most of us will see January 1st as the day that we start losing that weight, stop smoking, pledge to spend more time with our kids, make more money, or whatever important life change we feel a deep need to make.
The international speaker Zig Ziglar once told a story that went something like this…A day or so after one new year he went to the local gym that he was a member of as he routinely did several times each week. to his surprise, he could hardly find a parking place. He drove around the parking lot for a few minutes until he finally located an empty parking spot. This was highly unusual as he had never seen the parking lot even close to full since he had joined several months earlier. He was even more surprised upon entering the facility to find people waiting in line at virtually every piece of exercise equipment. He approached the help desk and was happy to see a familiar face, one of the trainers who regularly worked there. He asked the trainer…where have all of these people come from? There was hardly any place to park and there is at least a 10 to 20 minute wait on the exercise machines. What in the world is going on? The trainer replied…This happens every year at this time. You see, these are the new years resolution people who decided for their new years resolution to join an exercise club and get in shape. Don’t worry though because in 2 or 3 weeks they will fall back into their old routines and things will be back as they were until next year when the process repeats itself.
Most likely you know someone who has started a new years resolution with the best of intentions only to fall back into old habits and routines. Human beings are creatures of habit almost by rule and habits are hard to break. However, the good news is that habits cannot only be broken, they can be completely changed into new empowering habits that have the ability to change our lives in a large way. We all want good things in our lives and for our families. If you are currently not experiencing life as you would like it to be, one of the major reasons is the habits that currently exist in your life. If this is the case, take heart. There may be a habit or two that currently have a hold on you, but you are not your habits. It may seem that you are, but you are not.
My future blogs may be about anything from sports betting to an occasional guest appearance blog from my intelligent and beautiful wife Jolie. However, the majority of my blogs will be dedicated to the things that I have personally found to not only be helpful, but sometimes life changing. The most important thing that I want to leave you with today is this…With very few exceptions, the only difference between people who get what they want out of life compared to those who do not is not talent, luck, or magic. It is simply learning what successful people do and then implementing these practices into your life with persistence or habit. If someone else did it, then so can you. Keep an open mind as you read my future blogs and then decide for yourself if what I speak is the truth. My next blog will be in a week or so from the 1st. Let me leave you with a famous quote from Henry Ford that goes like this…”Whether you believe you can or believe you cannot, you are correct either way”. Think about that. Until Next time…BEST OF LIFE TO YOU AND YOUR FAMILY…Tim Parker
